Quilt Show Update

The waiting is over, our Guild's quilt show opened last night and we found out the judge's results. When I came around the corner and saw "Wedding Memories Linger" wearing a blue ribbon, I was beyond excited!!! I have become very emotional about this particular quilt and I'm not sure why. But seeing it hanging just makes me so happy.
After all the months of quilting, it looks exactly the way I had hoped it would. The contrast of the straight line quilting and the curved quilting looks perfect. And after completely quilting the border of feathers not once but twice, you can definitely see them. I am thrilled.

And my sweet little Navy quilt "Going Home" that was made for the 100th anniversary of Naval Aviation won a third place. This was a very full, competitive category, and I am very happy about a ribbon. Our judge this year was Anita Shackelford. She's an incredible quilter and she judged our quilts with a great deal of detail. I'll share more pictures later, it is a great show! We have 258 quilts hanging. If you're close to Pensacola, come by tomorrow and say hi!

Thanks for all your encouraging comments over the last few months about my wedding quilt. My very humble little log cabin has brought me much joy :)!!

Blogger's Festival

It's that of year again - the Blogger's Quilt Festival. This is my quilt "Going Home" which was made for the 100th Anniversary of Naval aviation. It was accepted into the traveling exhibit and has been touring the country since January. Here it is hanging in my office - it was up for one day before I had to ship it off!

Of the quilts I've done in the past year, this one stands out as being very special to me. I'm kind of a traditional quilter and so this "art" quilt was a stretch for me. You can find the whole story here. It's also the first time I've entered a national contest. So even though I didn't win an award, just being selected to be in the traveling exhibit was a thrill!

The rules stated that the quilt had to finish at 40 x 40 and my squares finish at 1". So there are 1,600 squares in this. My biggest challenge was creating the setting sun and trying to reflect the sunshine on the water.

The planes are WWII F6 Hellcats. I learned a lot about planes doing this. I was pretty pleased with the quilting on this too.

While looking thru my pictures to decide what I wanted to use for this post, look what I found. A picture of Rodger - checking it out!! This almost made me cry. I don't even remember taking this picture. He was always so interested in my quilts LOL!! He might have been my biggest fan!! Still miss this little guy...

How fun is this???

I opened my email the other day, and someone had sent me this picture from the display of Thread Tails and Vapor Trails exhibit at the Road to California quilt show. My quilt "Going Home" is the one on the left. I just cannot begin to tell you thrilling it is for me to think that my little quilt is travelling the country. So thank you Shirlee for sending this to me.

Navy Challenge Quilts

The last few weeks have been so busy, I haven't shared the Navy Quilt Challenge Exhibit. This is the grand prize winner. It truly is stunning. In the ribbon edge are printed the years from 1911 to 2011. I'm still not sure how she did the ghost plane and carrier. It is worthy of Best of Show!

This quilt was not in the show but was done by our Guild several years ago as a gift to the Naval Air Museum. I was honored to have made a patch for this quilt (mine is at 9 o'clock). It's in the permanent display at the museum.

This quilt was done by my friend Cena and came in 2nd in her division!!!! Congratulations on a great quilt. The face was based on Robert Redford in "The Great Waldo Pepper".

This quilt was done by my friend Sheree and is called Cradle of Aviation. It's of the lighthouse out a NAS - a landmark in Pensacola. How much fun to see all our quilts hanging.

The rest of these pictures were my favorites. They were stunning in person. Some won, some didn't but they were all so wonderful.

This quilt was done the lady who thought up this idea. These were made from real shirts and had tiny buttons and names. Sorry I didn't take a close-up.

The exhibit was hanging in a part of the museum called the hangar. There are planes everywhere!!

This quilt was chosen as viewer's choice. That's a real American Flag appliqued on and it was stunning!

If you get a chance to see this exhibit next year, I hope you'll go. It's a wonderful tribute to 100 years of Naval aviation.
