Last spring I found a sweet potato in the pantry that had gone to seed. Rather than throw it out, we planted it in the garden - whole. Just stuck it in the ground. Today, I found this.....
There's got to be close to 20 pounds!!
They are HUGE!! And they're very odd shaped. My question is this...
will they be any good? I'm going to boil a couple up tonight and see what happens. I was so excited to find them, but afraid they've been in there too long. I will be very sad to have to throw them all away. Any gardeners out there???

I don't know for sure, but they should be fine! I hope they are because I'd hate to throw them out too!
Wow! Look at those! You have a very green thumb! I would think they would be ok, but the test would be in cooking one. Good luck!
based on our experience, they should be fine and still taste yummy....looks good!

Hmmm I wonder if I could do that here in NW Ontario next spring, might be worth a try.

I just showed the pictures to J.D. He suggested putting them all back in the ground like you did the first one and becoming a potato farmer. :-)
Wow! I've never heard or seen such a thing happen, but it looks like you found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! Who knew it would be sweet potatoes!? We love them as a mash, with a little brown sugar and pumpkin pie spice. It's like eating dessert for dinner. Hope you enjoy every morsel... and that's a lot!
Yes, they will be fine. They are a little large (may be pethy(SP?), but cut what you need off and use them up!
Some local farmers grow sweet potatoes commercially...they are so much fun to watch grow.
