I think it's time....

I am hoping someone knows of a good tutorial on how to make a new ironing board cover. I have literally ironed on this one so much the fabric has deteriorated!! And the rest is scorched. I don't really want to buy a new one, you know, being unemployed, no money, blah, blah, blah! (To tell the truth, I'd rather use my money on new fabric and use something in my stash that is no longer a favorite).
Thanks for helping, I'll have more fun things to look at soon!!

Sew for home website has just posted a tutorial on an ironing board cover. I think you can find it on the moda website!

I was going to say Moda and see you have been directed already. Costco has the real wide boards back in too.

Your cover does look a bit worse for wear!

You could just use the old one as a pattern.
I have done it before.
You can make a casing around the edge and put in elastic.
You can also make it double sided so when one side is wrecked you just turn it over.

I'm glad to see you have helpful info here. I make mine from washed denim. Some folks worry over dye exchange, but I've never had a problem, and my Larry irons his light colored dress shirts with spray starch, too!

I turn my ironing board upside down, add a 5 inch trim around it, make a self casing and use about 30" of elastic, with two pieces of a fabric tie sewn on either end. That let's me get a firm pad that stays in place.

Hope you can get one turned out to like.

I made a pattern from the cover I took off my ironing board... and had some of that elastic with the draw string inside it... worked like a charm! I hate spending money on stuff like that anyway!

I find it bizarre how long we put up with crappy looking ironing board covers. We buy fabulous fabrics only to hoard them until they are no longer our favorites and look at crappy, burned up ironing board covers every day.... You have inspired me to do something about it!

My ironing surface is a piece of plywood covered with batting, then muslin (attached with simple staples to the back) I just place it on top of my ironing board and have a much larger, firmer surface to use. The board is cut the same length as the ironing board, but several inches wider. It's cheap to make, and when the cover is ugly it's super easy to simply cover it with more muslin. I find regular ironing boards too soft - making it harder to get really flat seams, and distorting some seams as the pieces sink into the softness. I've even made myself a smaller 18" x 24" board to take to classes :0)

That's funny you mentioned your ironing board cover being worn out. I just was thinking the same thing about mine last night. It's been fun wearing it out!

Hi Karen! You have some great readers here with good feedback. You know, I just throw layered pieces of muslin over the darn thing. I'm no help. But I sure am thinking of you. Sending you warm hugs and lots of love to my fellow floridian. *karendianne.
