One Stitch At a Time

Well, after 3 days of ripping, all of my hand quilting stitches are gone from my basket quilt. I'm using a wool batt, so those little darlings were way down in there - arghhhh!! But I truly know in my heart, I would never have finished HQ this quilt.First off, it got way too big, and secondly, the quilting marking design was almost impossible to see.
So I am happy that one day my beautiful baskets will be done.

My problem now is.......... how to machine quilt this. Here's my basket post from a few months ago. As always, any suggestions are more than welcome.

Have a great day,
-Karen

I'm working on a basket quilt right now and the pattern author suggests a floral bouquet type of quilting design over the entire basket block. I can email you a picture if you aren't visualizing clearly. :) I don't know if I'm going to follow that advice for my quilt, as my basket blocks are full of HSTs. Since your basket is simpler, the idea might work!

I'm also quilting a basket quilt (although it is set aside for a little while). Mine has 4 baskets per block with sashings and I'm doing various loops in some parts, feathers in the border, leaves in the sashings, etc. etc. Since your blocks are small and no sashing, I think I would do an all over pattern such swirls like Kim Diehl does in one of her books - she calls them cinnamon rolls. Just an idea.

No advise here... but I do love the baskets. I just wanted to tell you that I made my Nana Girl quilt from SBS! Going to post it today:)

Oh, how I dislike taking out quilting stitches. Machine quilting is the worst. But you have your hq stitches out and can move on with the quilt.

I know a lady who bought a quilt at a fund raising auction. It had been machine quilted. She took all the stitches out and hand quilted it.

Oh, I feel for you having to rip out but it's done now and you can plan the next stage. I have no ideas but I'm sure you'll come up with something great.

I've quilted a on-point basket quilt, though each "square" of baskets were position with four handles pointing toward the center. Each basket was quilted with a "spray" of loops. The best I can explain it without showing you would be a series of loops, like a Dresden fan (with rounded blade tips). The tallest in the center, and smaller loops graduated on each side. As for the open spaces, the background, I think I'd stipple quilt, or as least quilt an all over spiral (snail) design, or paisley shapes filled in smaller paisleys. Oh! All this is so difficult to explain without pictures! But certainly, whatever you do, I have no doubt it will be wonderful.

This is a lovely quilt and since the baskets are the stars I'd probably keep it simple. How about stitching 1/4" outside each basket with a flower inside the handle?

Bummer having to rip all that quilting out. But I understand wanting such a beautiful quilt to be finished.

Ugh. Your post reminds me I have some un-stitching to do in my sewing room. Good job on getting yours done. Karmen
